Ascribing Artist Janet Smith: Limelight Exhibit

Walt and Janet Schumacher will be the HAL Limelight artists for the month of August. Their exhibit is titled "Ghost Towns of Montana", featuring photographs they took last summer. This exhibit was shown at the Huntsville Times in June, and their photographers were favorably impressed. Janet's are in color, and Walt's are all in Black and White.

The ghost towns are Bannack, Garnet, Virginia City and Nevada City. Bannack is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the country, founded in 1862. Most inhabitants had moved on by the 1950's, and sixty structures remain standing. Garnet also came alive in 1862 when gold was discovered nearby. It was abandoned around 1918. Virginia City still has 132 inhabitants, and its nearby neighbor, Nevada city, is a re-creation of the original city plus many buildings moved there from other ghost towns, including Yellowstone's "Recreation Hall", built in 1910.

About the Artist

Joe Fikes has been seriously interested in photography since 1968 and began using professional-grade cameras starting in 1972. After taking photographs using professional-grade 35 millimeter and 4x5 view cameras from 1979-2002, he shifted to exclusively using digitals cameras in 2003. In 2007, Fikes began exhibiting his artwork at the Monte Sano art Show and since then, he has held numerous photograph exhibits through the Huntsville area.

16 Main Gallery to host "Feed Your Palette" party to promote downtown revitalization project

Our very own Ascribing Artist Michele Lee (www.artisticfinishesstudio.com) was in the local paper. See below what she is up to.

MADISON, AL -- Madison city officials such as Mayor Paul Finley and council members are often in the limelight.

But Thursday night their wives -- and one lucky winner -- will take center stage at the new 16 Main art gallery in downtown Madison for a night of dining on appetizers from Main Street Cafe and an art lesson by Madison artist Michele Lee.

Finley's wife, Dr. Julie Finley, an assistant principal at Bob Jones High School, and the wives of six council members -- Carlene Cowles (Tim), Pam Holtzclaw (Bill), Debbie Overcash (Tommy), Donna Haraway (Steve), Sharon Holcombe (Tim) and Lisa Vannoy (Larry) -- are selling tickets for a chance for one person to join them at "Feed Your Palette," Thursday night at 16 Main.

The event is to raise awareness of the city's new art gallery and the downtown revitalization project. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Madison Street Festival. Organizers will use the money to pay for art lessons for one or possibly more children who attend the Madison Street Festival this fall.

My Plans for You: 1) Planning Our Steps

Greetings Artists!

As I reflect over the past two months about all the cutting and pruning the Lord has done in my life to free me up for my plans, I realize my plans are totally secondary to His plans. As sure as the timing was right to fulfill my plans, God showed me His, which has involved opening our home to a 16-year old nephew of ours who was in need. This change in plans has brought on 6 weeks worth of adjustments and wondering how we can provide for him. The words from the last devotion now echo in my mind about this Christian walk. One, God rarely reveals the entire picture to us in a way where we see the path from beginning to end and everything in between. Two, God rarely shows us in a way where we see the provision from beginning to end and everywhere in between.

I’m reminded of the Apostle Paul when he was in Ephesus and Acts 19:21 records, “Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” Sounds simple enough, but little did Paul know he would endure riots, arrests, a shipwreck and go to Rome as a prisoner in chains more than 5 years later.

So, if this email finds you today frustrated in plans gone astray, I pray you will turn to the Creator for His perspective. In reading how God worked in Paul’s life it comforts me in knowing even when things are not going as planned . . . maybe they are.

Hi Everyone-

We will be hosting a 2 part art painting experience on Love---

Monday July 12th and July 19th from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the grace Concourse (at Asbury United Methodist Church).

This is basically a bible study, allowing the students to explore scripture though art instead of the more traditional bible study methods, where we read and write...

The first session we will look at how God loves us, and then begin our pieces, the second week we will finish the pieces. All levels of skill are

welcome:)

Space is limited, but we have room for 6 folks on easels, and 5 folks on flat tables..

You'll need to email me with which you'd prefer, and I will try to schedule your first choice, if you have your own easel, you can bring that...

For supplies, please bring a canvas with you of the size you'd like to work on, and your brushes and paints, ...I will have a few brushes available and

some paint (mostly craft paint). This is going to be meditative in nature, and we will possibly display some of the art during the next sermon series...7 longings in the Grace concourse.

Hymns, songs, quotes and words are among my favorite things to paint. There is a connection between the words that stirs a deep emotion in my soul.

I am moved by something that I once read that says,

“I love the old songs,

The ones that people sang together through all of the dramas in their lives,

The songs that were passed like heirlooms from one generation to another,

And are still remembered.”

For me, most of those old songs are hymns that I sang growing up in church every Sunday. “I Need Thee Every Hour”, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”, “It Is Well With My Soul”, and of course, “How Great Thou Art”.

These hymns played a significant role in my life during a very difficult time. While on my early morning walks each day, I would sing any hymn that came to mind, in an effort to ease the hurt in my heart. God always gave me the words that I needed for the day as he promises in

Psalms 32: 7, “You are my hiding place, you will protect me from troubles and

surround me with songs of deliverance”.

During this painful time in my life, painting these words on canvas brought me great comfort.

My first painting, “Take It To The Lord In Prayer” will always be the most dear to me because it brought me such peace. No matter what you face during this life there is One who is always available to listen.

Hymns are an important thread in the fabric of my life. Their words leave precious memories behind when their melodies cease. I hope you too will remember the hymns of your youth and be able to hear the music again.

I am an artist from North Alabama on a path to full-time artistry in a few years when I can retire. I've always looked at things and said to myself "Man! I wish I could paint that!" Well, when my daughter got her driver's license (she's 24 now) and I was waiting up nights to hear her pull into the driveway, I decided to buy a book on portrait and flower painting. Those were the two things I wanted to learn to paint. I dug in and started trying. Those two things are still the ones that give me the most joy I believe...especially portraits. There's just something about seeing that essence of a person come to life in your painting. It's what keeps me up at night and keeps me entranced to the point that I forget where I am and whatever worries I might have. It's great therapy and I am constantly trying to steal time from the rest of life to get back to the canvas. I must say, my original inspiration to go ahead and try painting this late in life was a video at the Huntsville art museum about Grandma Moses. (She started late in life and in the video she was in her 90'S). She was sitting at her little table painting in the video talking to the person doing the documentary and she said "I just paint what I see". That just about distills it down to the basic best advice I've heard yet. You just paint what you see! God has granted me the ability to see more and more deeply everyday....in so many ways. I know that He is the source of all gifts and He's given me SO much in my life that I'm thankful for each and every day. Since I started to paint I look at things differently...the way the light hits things, the blues in shadows, the yellows in the leaves, the pinks in the clouds... and as I look at those things I am in awe of God's glorious creations and I bow to the Master creator. I give him all the glory for the gifts I have been given and my humble attempts to copy his creations.

I attended a workshop with artist Bart Lindstrom and greatly admire his work and have studied many books on painting. The most impressive being one by Chris Saper on flesh tones. I'm very excited to be planning a trip to Arizona in July to study under her with my new friend and local artist Glennis Black . I have also had the privilege of learning from my dear friend Carole Foret' for the last 3 or 4 years. She has taught me so much that I am deeply indebted to her.

It surprises me when I hear others refer to me as an artist. I’ve never thought of myself in those terms. I simply keep my eyes open to see the beauty that surrounds us, particularly the things in nature that the Creator has made. I’ve never ceased to be astonished by His creativity, intellect, craftsmanship, and most of all, His deep, deep mercy and love. I also enjoy photographing the beautiful things that people have made… machinery, architecture, and gizmos – from simple, hand-made things all the way up to high-tech things. And I appreciate folks who plant trees or put flowers in their windows or gardens, for they add beauty to our lives.

If I contribute anything at all to this process, it’s through my little obsession with craftsmanship. It might sound simple, but I just like to get my subjects in focus. I try to expose them properly. I try to frame them well, and perhaps, from a fresh vantage point. And I look for surprises.

I’ve been playing with photography in a serious way for about 40 years, always as a hobby, not as a profession. With one exception, all of the images in this exhibit were taken within the last few years using Canon digital SLR cameras.

I always edit my images in Photoshop. No exceptions, ever! Sometimes it’s only to sharpen them slightly (to compensate for the digital sensor anti-aliasing filters). But I also adjust the brightness, contrast, color balance and saturation to give the images the visual impact I think they need. And occasionally I need to remove a stray power line or “Do Not Loiter” sign. Rarely, I’ll actually move or delete elements of the scene.
