Cutting & Pruning: 7) Before the Gardener

The devotion last week may have struck a strong chord in you of agreement or agitation. It was definitely not my intent to upset anyone, but bring food for thought so that we may “come now and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18). I agree the Bible contains verses of God’s plans to prosper (Jeremiah 29:11) and of Him giving you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). The problem is when people measure righteousness by worldly possessions and prosperity or even worse make it the focus of Christianity and look down in pity on those who don’t measure up. Yes, God may prosper you and then again He may not, He is God. I am certain though that He calls us to see the worth in every individual no matter what their worldly status.

We must remember the main blessings of being a Christian are spiritual blessings like forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7), peace with God (Romans 5:1), an inheritance (1 Peter 1:3), access to God (Hebrews 4:16), a helper, teacher and reminder through the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) and a new covenant of grace through the blood of Jesus (Luke 22) to which material things have no comparison. I’m afraid we overlook some of the most Godly people, because they don’t stand out in this culture of materialism.

Back to cutting and pruning . . . Do you feel like you are running into a brick wall with this cutting and pruning stuff? Are you distracted and deterred? I will admit this past month has been one of great expectations with little real progress. The forces of darkness and my own flesh cry out NO! They are comfortable with the old and take pleasure in their rebellion. They don’t want new life to spring forth that will produce fruit.

If that sounds familiar, you might want to join me this week in writing down the major priorities, affections and labors in your life. Then spend time in prayer before the Gardener and taking an honest evaluation of the true worth of those items. How? Based on eternity. Do you see the Lord looking upon that branch in your life and saying in the end, “well done my good and faithful servant” if not it probably needs to be cut. Maybe this exercise will help move us in the right direction. It is my prayer we will persevere and not grow weary.

Faith Driven Drawing Classes by Rita Campbell

I recently found the article below written this past Oct. by WAAY TV Focus on Faith reporter, Stephanie Beecken. I thought I would share it here.

A woman in Athens teaches art classes and helps people change their perspective on life.

Rita Campbell teaches people how to draw while relating her classes to scripture.

Rita's been an artist for years. 3 months ago, she began teaching a drawing class in Athens.

"I believe we're all artists and so there's a creative nature in us. I'm just one who has found it by the grace of God and wants to share it," said Rita Campbell.

While teaching, she relates the act of drawing to the word of God.

"I'm just giving honor where honor's due and I say that's the Lord Jesus Christ and that He is the link between the creator and the creation. He is creativity," said Campbell.

Rita said learning how to be creative can work in and improve every aspect of life.

Spring Fling Art Show

May 1-2, 2010

Mentone, Alabama

On Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd, the Mentone Area Arts Council will sponsor the Spring Fling Art Show in Mentone, Alabama. This is one of Mentone's busiest weekends as visitors from all over the southeast descend upon Mentone to enjoy the beginning of a season of warm weather in clear and refreshing mountain air.

In addition to the Art Show, there will be an automobile show at the Mentone Inn and another art show in Valley Head, just a few miles from Mentone. Also on Saturday night, a Spring Fling Party will be held at the Mentone Springs Hotel which will include food and entertainment by the Collard Greens, a jazz ensemble from Rome, Georgia.

The Art Show will be held at Mason Park, the Mentone Springs Hotel, grounds of the Mentone Inn, and in Rue Gardens. All of the above sites are within ready waking distance of one another and are located in the Town Center of Mentone.

The Show will run from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday, and 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Sunday. Artists are also encouraged to show their work at the Mentone Springs Hotel during the Spring Fling Party on Saturday night with the condition that the Hotel has requested a 10% price reduction for sales made during the Party as an incentive for the general public to attend the event(the cost of the Party for members of the general public is $35 per person).

There is no charge for participating in this Show. You will be assigned a general location for your booth and setup is on a first come, first serve basis at the assigned location.

The Show will be advertised throughout the region and a large turnout for the Show is anticipated.

Mural Panel Artist Wanted

Terry Cornett of Heritage Drum Company is looking for a local artist to paint mural panels on his handcrafted rope-tensions drums. See examples posted.

Terry has been paying $200 for artwork. This is the price he charges the customer. He does not profit from another's work. All work can be signed (so it is not anonymous art).

While oils may be more correct for "period reproductions" Terry thinks acrylics are more stable and quicker. Artwork will be painted on a 16" diameter cylinder and total size of art will probably never exceed 13" x 13" Terry has painted one bass drum, whose art was closer to 16 x 16 over all. PLEASE forward this info to anyone you think might be interested in doing some contract work. Usually it is one drum at a time. Terry has an order which will be ready for paint in 30 days.

Ascribing Artist John Stout Featured in The Horseman

Ascribing Artist, John Stout (Texas) is featured in The Horseman Publication. John creates the all the artwork including the art murals, pin striping and gold leafing on the stage coaches produced by J. W. Brown Stagecoach Works. Several of the stage coaches have appeared in Wells Fargo Commercials and movies such as Maverick, Around the World in 80 Days, Wild Wild West and Night at the Museum.

Cutting & Pruning: 6) Receiving

Before we leave this section of God’s Word I have to address verse 7 of chapter 15, “ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” In my early Christian walk I stumbled all over verses like this and I John 3:22 “and whatever we ask we receive from Him”. I stumbled because my flesh cried out for comfort and pleasure and possessions. So, the “whatever” I was asking for really was whatever “I” was asking for.

If you happen to look those verses up or know them you realize I wrote only a portion of each verse. The first verse is, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” And the second verse is “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.” The key is we will receive whatever we ask for when we are abiding and keeping His commandments, because our will is in submission to His will.

Here is my version of a story I heard a long time ago that may help our understanding. There was a little boy who was anticipating the coming of Christmas. He knew presents were involved and had even asked for some. His father thought he was old enough to own a bicycle, so weeks before Christmas day he went out and bought a red BMX off-road bicycle with wide knobby tires for his son and hid it in the garage. From that day forward the father subtly began to talk to his son about, “how nice it would be to have a bike” and “how exciting it would be to have one with wide knobby tires that he could ride off-road ” and “how fast a red one would look”. Well, his son was finally convinced that was exactly what he wanted and so asked for it for Christmas. When Christmas day came guess what he received, a red BMX off-road bicycle with wide knobby tires!

Prayer has little to do with swaying God to give us our wants and desires. Jesus taught to pray, “give us each day our daily bread” . . . not cake. Many people would say, well you just don’t have enough faith to obtain the comfort, pleasure and possessions God wants to give you, but it doesn’t have anything to do with whether I can muster up enough faith, because even my faith is from God. Just ask those first century Christians who were mocked, imprisoned, tortured and put to death. Hebrews says they went about in sheepskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated, wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground. Can we honestly say they just didn't have enough faith? Hebrews says they were, "men of whom the world was not worthy". Prayer has everything to do with having faith in Christ who is able and allowing the Spirit to transform our desires to that of the Father, so that "whatever we ask we receive from Him", because it is already in the garage!

This is a painting, Ascribing Artist, John Stout created of his daughter, Denise. He started the painting in the late 1970's and recently reworked it giving it more life.

John retired recently, as an accomplished Graphic Artist, and began to paint for pleasure. He has produced many fine art paintings that have won several awards. Currently, John resides in Texas with his wife, Judi.

John is also the father of Ascribing Artist, Gina Hurst. John's other children are very talented in the arts as well.

Cutting & Pruning: 5) Everlasting

I have come to realize that it might take me the first 6 months of 2010 just to discern the areas of pruning and cutting the Lord is wanting to do in my life and then a lifetime to surrender them. This is mainly due to placing myself on the throne of my life instead of submitting to the Lord and in some cases offering up reasons to keep those unfruitful and dead branches. I make excuses like, “that branch might produce fruit if I work a little harder” or “I might need that dead branch as a cane when I grow older” or “that dead branch doesn’t really interfere with my relationship with the Lord.” Crucifying self is a day-by-day, hour-by-hour and moment-by-moment intentional act, an act of obedience as we learned even in the last devotion.

If you will bear with me one more time concerning the word “Abide” you will notice in some translations the word is translated “remain” and means “to continue without fading or being lost.” Now that’s good . . . talk about security! Think back to that moment when you surrendered your will to Christ, believed and repented. The burden of your sin was lifted and all things became new. God the Father and Jesus his son made their home with you through the Holy Spirit and not a temporary home until you mess it up, not a summer home until your love wanes or a rental home until another spirit takes up resident, but a permanent home until we are welcomed into glory. To “abide” means their indwelling will continue and never fade away! The security deposit of the Holy Spirit places us in the kingdom to never be lost again!

So far, how are we to bear fruit?

To live dwelling in the presence of the LORD through His Word, prayer and worship

To live accepting or acting in accordance with the commandments and will of the LORD

To live knowing the Spirit of the LORD will never fade and we will never be lost again

Feb 28, 2010 CHRISTIAN ART CONTEST This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories all ages (Under 16 requires parental submission). This contest is for artists working in all visual art mediums. There is no theme for the contest, so artists are free to submit artwork of their choice. Huntsville Art for Heart Ball- Call for Art Donations

Dear Artist,

As you may know, cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer of men and women in the United States. In our state of Alabama alone, an estimated 17,000 lives will be claimed by heart disease and stroke this year. The sole mission of the American Heart Association is to reduce disability and death caused by cardiovascular disease.

In the coming year, North Alabama will host the Huntsville Art for Heart Ball on April 10th at the Westin Huntsville. The money raised supports AHA funded cardiovascular research and advocacy programs in the state of Alabama and across the US. We would appreciate your consideration in supporting this cause by donating a piece of art to be used as an auction item during this event.

In response to your generosity, we will promote your art at the event because we believe that promoting your work and commitment to the American Heart Association enhances your visibility in our community and generates goodwill among an influential group of patrons.
