"Feed Your Palette" Monthly Art Classes at Reflectives Frame & Art Gallery

I have always enjoyed drawing. After graduating from Middle Tenn. State University in 1975 with a B.S. degree in Art Education, I taught art for over 11 years in public schools and home school groups. After my own children grew up and left home, I began to enjoy my own art studio like never before. I paint in oils and pastels, concentrating on the emotional and spiritual impact of human life. I love teaching adults how to truly see whatever they would like to draw realistically. Learning how to see clearly is the prerequisite for drawing accurately. From that point on, creativity can have free access to individual style and artistic expression. It is like seeing the shape of letters in order to write creatively with words .

I am presently organizing a drawing group in the Athens area for those who would like to come together and draw from a live model or real stillife on a weekly basis. Also, I teach drawing classes as described on my web site: drawingfromtherock.com The name Drawing From the Rock came from a scripture that inspired me to begin my art ministry to the community: Isaiah 51:1 Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord, look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. That Rock is Jesus Christ, and I am in Him. That means I have the mind of Christ; I am a "chip off the old block", so to speak. My spirit and His are one. I believe I am called of God to encourage the Body of Christ to live in holistic health, and that includes having a restful mind that functions out of a creative relationship with Christ. We have been made in His image; therefore, we can become creative as He is whenever we "draw upon" His nature given to us.

I grew up with creative abilities that I never fully recognized until I learned that these abilities are my heritage from the One who created me and the whole universe! As a Son or Daughter of God, one can grow in the nature of the Father just by learning from Him! For many years, I experienced "artist's block" ( not enjoying doing my own art) because I did not understand who I really am in Christ Jesus. God had to take me to Paris, Amsterdam, and Florence, Italy to show me what He can do through those who truly called themselves "Artists". I repented for " hiding my talents in a napkin", and since that time several years ago, my talents and enthusiasm have multiplied tremendously.

May we, as God's children, draw from the Rock, Jesus Christ, in whom we should move and have our being. The word "artist" should not represent any elite group of people; rather, it is a descriptive term referring to those who recognize their creative talents and enjoy them. Many artists never give honor to the source of all true creativity, and others never accept their heritage. I, for one, want to do both and then help others to do the same. How about you?

Isaiah 50:4 The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

Cutting & Pruning: 9) The Will of the Father

Greetings,

Recently I have been reading through the gospel of Mark. I am one who firmly believes that God speaks to us primarily through His Word and being sovereign knows where we are going to be in His Word on any given day to speak directly to where we are in life. Many times when we are convicted or challenged by His Word we dismiss it, because it is not what we want to hear, but anyone can search the scriptures until they find the answer they want.

This past week as I went back to the “list” all I could think about was how do we gauge spiritual fruit? When it comes to the fruit of our personal lives as transformed believers, we see it in the fruit of the Spirit as mentioned in Galations 5:22, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” These fruits come forth as the Spirit transforms our old sinful nature. We can look at the list and see how we used to be one way by the flesh, but are now another way by the Spirit. This transformation is a life-long process that will never be complete this side of heaven.

In gauging the fruit of our activities though, my mind went to understanding it must be the activities that seemingly have the biggest impact or largest movement or greatest gathering. In the gospel of Mark, he wastes no time describing the mass movement gathering around Jesus. “Again he began to teach beside the sea. And a very large crowd gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.” Mark 4:1. This is the same crowd as mentioned in chapter 3 that where “from Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon.” A modern day preachers wildest dream! Let’s see, the disciples need to pass an offering plate, we need to start a building project, form some committees and do this thing right! Well, Jesus did just that . . .

Nope, he sailed his boat away from the crowd to the other side of the sea to meet with a violent, demon-possessed man, living in the tombs, an outcast of society, crying out and bruising himself with stones. A modern day preachers worst nightmare! Well, Jesus casts out the demons, heals the man and said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Mark 5:19b. Believe it or not this unlikely man becomes the first Gentile missionary and unlike all the other times where Jesus told people to keep silent about being healed, he sends this man on his way to prepare the whole region for the future mission of the church.

We come from different places, homes and countries. We are of different colors, race and creed. We own different beliefs, values and codes. We each see our God from a different pair of glasses. We swim in places that are cold and sometimes we need to breathe slowly just to stay alive. Other times we swim in the warm fluid temptations of this world. Without one another we cannot survive. We cannot grow. We cannot learn to love. We are like a great symphony in these waters. Each of us contributing a special note until the sounds fill our soul with a song that can only be heard and seen by God. We are like the Koi….we ARE “The Symphony”

Cutting & Pruning: 8) Eternal Significance

This past week I began to write down all those priorities, affections and labors in my life and quickly became overwhelmed. I began by writing down the obvious, that I’m called to be a husband and a father as well as a son and son-in-law. Followed by church work, activities and committees. Then there is work that puts food on the table, Ascribing Artists, other community organizations and finally personal goals. Eight major categories that make up were I find myself in life right now. They are probably not much different from the ones you have in your life.

Next, I began to list the activities under each of those categories that occupy my time. Some of them overlapped, but many did not. Some were obvious like committees I’m on and some were not so obvious like time spent watching TV. The exercise was to truthfully discovery what it is that I spend my time doing. Honestly, after I wrote them all down I got up and walked away. How do we determine what God would have us cut and prune especially between things that are seemingly “good”? Back to God’s word . . .

Just a little farther in John chapter 15 in verse 16 Jesus says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give you.” What? Our fruit should abide! Well, that brings us full circle doesn’t it. Jesus is telling us that the fruit of our lives should:

Reflect us dwelling in the presence of the LORD through His Word, prayer and worship

Reflect us accepting or acting in accordance with the commandments and will of the LORD

Reflect us knowing the Spirit of the LORD will never fade and we will never be lost again

Bottom line, our fruit as Christians should have eternal significance.

JUDY BOBULA

My early paintings were realistic watercolor landscapes and florals. Over time my work evolved into more abstract, non-objective representations. I now work intuitively, without conscious thought on a destination or path. Only after a vision emerges does my process become more directed. While intuitive, my work reflects what I have done and where I have been, and inspiration comes from what I have seen in the natural world.

I create texture and dimension as I layer, sand, lift off materials, and add found items. My media remains water based on canvas and paper, and color is the unifying force. While shapes provide structure, lines and textures move freely throughout. Working in mixed media painting is a continually changing process and a challenge that allows me enormous freedom of expression.

When creating my works, I am taken to a meditative, relaxed, spiritual state. When these creative journeys succeed, my viewer’s spirit will also be taken to a special time, place or event in their own life.

Decatur Jaycees would like to invite you to take part in the 2010 Cajunfest Art Walk to be held on Friday, April 16 as part of this year's Cajunfest event. The event will be held at Rhodes Ferry Park in downtown Decatur and will feature live zydeco music and Cajun food. This is the 7th year for the Decatur Jaycees to host Cajunfest, which has annually drawn crowds of 500+. We are expecting to receive an even larger crowd this year because it will be a family-friendly free event and will be in the downtown area.

Art On the Square Gears Up for 2010 Artists

Art On The Square plans to offer multiple artist gatherings and workshops in 2010. A marketing workshop geared to visual artists who work in any medium will kick off the AOTS year. The first workshop will be held on Sat., March 13, 2010, from 9am- noon, at The Club House on Marion Street in downtown Athens. The event is titled Art Marketing! An Artist's Meet and Workshop!

“This is a dynamic event for local artists,” says Lisa Milby, President of Art On The Square. “ It brings a wealth of information to our artists who wish to pursue broader opportunities in getting their art out to multiple communities. It also encourages artists to do the things that keep art alive in our area. We are making this workshop very affordable because we want artists to be encouraged and supported in their work. One way to do that is to sponsor events that facilitate artists meeting with one another and sharing their experiences or learning about concrete ways to continue making art in spite of obstacles that real life brings to the process.”

On Saturday, March 13, at 9am, AOTS will host this first of several planned gatherings of local artists in the area. This particular workshop will include mega doses of marketing strategies specific to art. The agenda will include everything from creating a marketing kit and approaching galleries to developing grassroots marketing strategies.

Featured speakers include Gina Hurst of Ascribing Artists, who is a long time art promoter with over 20 years experience in the art market. Gina has served on multiple art related non-profits and Boards, has experience managing art galleries, and is considered a networking mentor. Also presenting will be Athens own Trisha Black, Executive Director of the downtown revitalization organization, Spirit of Athens, who has an extensive education and career history in marketing and media.

The cost is $25 for the three hour workshop and includes a continental breakfast and a complimentary one year membership to the Art On The Square organization. Art On The Square has events planned throughout the calendar year that include Children's Art Camps in June, a Preview Party and Silent Auction in August,and a juried Fine Art Festival on the Courthouse grounds in downtown Athens on Sept.11,2010. The fee for this educational workshop in March is set to mainly cover the breakfast and printing costs involved in making this happen.

“We are determined to be an organization that works diligently to meet our mission,” Ms. Milby says, “Art On The Square, is a non-profit organization, created by a dedicated group of volunteers, to support local artists, promote art education, and bring cultural events to our area.”
