Artist Friend's Great Article: Meet Your Maker!

My very dear childhood friend and talented artist, Gina Miller, wrote this great article for Dakota Voice. I thought I would share it with the Ascribing Artists blog. GH

Meet Your Maker!

Gina Miller

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:16-18

Jesus spoke those words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee, who came to Jesus in secret by night to try to understand Jesus’ message of salvation.

The Gospel–the Good News–is really quite simple, and at the same time, its depths are infinite. Contained in the Bible is God’s message to mankind, the path to salvation through his only begotten Son, Jesus. There is no other way to reach God, except through belief in Jesus as our savior. As Jesus said in John 14:6:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.”

Pretty exclusive? You better believe it is!

The Bible is no ordinary book; its words are alive and powerful, illuminated to our minds through our spirits and only by the Holy Spirit–God’s spirit. To those who honestly seek to know God, the meaning of the words of the Bible will be revealed. As Paul notes in 1 Corinthians chapter 2, the things–the teachings–that come from God are considered foolishness to people who don’t have God’s Spirit living in them, because the Word is spiritually understood by the man who has as his teacher the Holy Spirit. Then, our minds are able to grasp the meaning of the words of the Bible, and the more we study the Bible and seek to know, the more the Spirit of God reveals to our minds. But, the mind of the man without God cannot understand the words of the Bible–they are senseless to him.

What most people in the world do not understand, is that each of us is designed to seek God. We all have a “God-shaped hole” in our spirits–in our hearts–that only God can fill. People try endlessly to fill that special empty place with all manor of earthly things like money, drugs and alcohol, sex, food, thrills, material objects and other people, but none of those things will ever fill that longing in our hearts.

We are designed to have a relationship with the One who made us–God, who sent his only Son to die in our stead. Why did Jesus die on the cross for our sins? I can’t get my mind around how much God loves us that he would make a way for us to be reconciled to him as he did. Since the Garden, when Adam chose to disobey God, man has been under the curse of sin and death–born to die, if you will. In order for us to be reconciled to a relationship with God, we had to live a perfect and sinless life, but as the Bible tells us, no one–not anyone now, then or ever–could possibly live a sinless life.

The Son of God, Jesus, willingly condescended to leave his place in heaven and take on the form of mortal man. Born into the world, he was fully God and fully man at the same time. He agreed to do this for the purpose of bringing God’s salvation to mankind. Not only did Jesus bring us his teachings, but at the same time, he lived a sinless life. Satan likely believed that if he could kill Jesus, his problem would go away. That may have been the biggest trap Satan has ever fallen into!

The fact was that Satan could not “legally” claim the life of Jesus. Those who sin–all of us–are marked for death as the punishment for sin, and eternal separation from God if we are not reconciled to him. But, Jesus did not sin at all in his life, so death could not hold him. As Jesus made clear, no one had the power to take his life, he willingly gave it for us. The cross was his goal, not his downfall.

So, Jesus’ death on the cross and subsequent resurrection from the dead was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins that God’s law demanded. He paid the price of the sinner, taking the death upon himself that all of us deserve, but he did it without having earned that death sentence. He took our place in death, but death could not keep him because he was not legally held in death, being sinless.

Just before he died on the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished!” What was finished was God’s plan for saving mankind in this wretched and fallen world. Jesus rose from the dead in three days with mission accomplished!

We are “saved” when we believe in Jesus and what he did for our sake and ask God to come into our life through Jesus’ name. It’s that simple.

We should not wait until we “meet our Maker” to meet him. We simply have to look toward him right now with our hearts and our minds, and he’s always standing right there next to us waiting to reveal himself to us. Reach out for him as you would a dear friend, but unlike your dearest of friends, he will never let you down. And he will fill that special hole in your heart with his Spirit. The peace and freedom he gives you are amazing!

Meet your Maker now, while you still have time.

Cutting & Pruning: 11) True Calling

I mentioned back in January, instead of focusing on the same old resolutions that the Lord had pressed upon me to make 2010 a year of “Cutting and Pruning”. He has been guiding me through this process, understanding how we bear spiritual fruit as summarized in devotion 5. Then back in devotion 7, I invited each of you to join me in writing down the major priorities, affections and labors in each of our lives and to spend time in prayer before the Gardener and take an honest evaluation of the true worth of those items. We then went on to read what true fruit will look like as summarized in devotion 8 and how to gauge our specific activities in devotion 10.

I will testify that God has done an amazing work in the cutting and pruning of my life starting even back in September of last year with SoulStock, after 9 years of helping them promote that event, passing the torch. Here lately, God has affirmed and confirmed a decision I have been struggling with for about 6 months in ways only He could orchestrate and has moved in such a way for me to step down from several positions at our church and more fully pursue what God has in store for Ascribing Artists. I say this not as a “feather in my cap”, but to say that God will guide and direct in ways unimaginable, even for a wretched sinner such as myself, if we will but abandon our nets and truly follow after him, Mark 1:18.

Be aware that a Christian who is too busy to pursue God in prayer and in His Word is an ineffective Christian. Believers who are overworked or caught up in this rat race are no threat to the forces of evil. It is said that Satan is content with letting the Believer become overworked even through church involvement if it will prevent the Believer from praying for and pursuing that which he is truly called to do resulting in spiritual fruit. Satan will even convince us that the more we do for a local church the more righteous and effective we are, so we sign-up for this committee and that committee, keep the kids, sing in the choir, teach a class, tend to the building, etc., all the while producing no spiritual fruit. Now I am by no means suggesting any of the above is wrong or not a true calling, because I Corinthians 12:14 states, “Now the body is not made up of one part but of many.” So, the question is not the part itself, but if you are called to be that part. Even good things, when they are not a true calling, can produce the wrong results such as burnout, lack of faith and disillusionment.

May you focus on your calling and move forth in God’s power . . .

Betty Burchfield's Cinderella

"Cinderella" by Betty Burchfield, copyright

Photo of Cinderella for painting reference

Betty Burchfield says:

I am so blessed to know Cinderella. She lives in the castle in Huntsville.
Cinderella entertains at children's birthday parties along with other Fairy Tale characters. She loves children and loves to make them happy.
Now, you may ask...... Who is this beautiful princess? The answer is..."She's my only daughter, Debbie Futrell Jones" After having two sons, I begged God to let the new baby be a girl. (This was the days before ultrasound). Well, He answered my prayer and much more. She is beautiful, kind and an angel from Heaven.
As you can see, I have fixed her hair. I like special requests such as this. My magic paint brush just removes wrinkles, blemishes, dresses one up and even gives new hair styles.

God is so good. I asked for a daughter and I got the best. I got "Cinderella"! This painting will be hung in our "Family Gallery" along with other members of my family.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT: JACKIE SEGARS
I like just about any kind of art. I Iike to think about it, talk about it, read about it, create it and so on.

There are no deep reasons or profound messages-no politics or philosophy-in my art. When I see the works of early American painters like Bierstadt or Remington, I can only imagine what has slipped away. Yet there is so much beauty still left across this country, and I would like to paint as much of it as I can. I may never get there physically, but I am transported to all the wild and beautiful places when I paint them.

I hope that when others look at my work, they will be transported, too, just for a while.
Favorite Bible Verses
I like to look back to the beginning, Genesis 1:1, and be reminded that God created heaven and earth. He took care of everything perfectly then and he will take care of us now, according to his purpose, Romans 8.

It would be impossible for me not to believe that God created the earth. To be near a beautiful meadow or mountain or stream gives a feeling akin to being in church, and I just have to paint it.

Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

My most favorite verses are this

Heb 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Heb 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Marsh Sunset, by Russ Sexton, copyright
Another place i love is the beach and hiking the shore lines. In Destin there is a natinal sea shore , one of the last true florida landscapes. Catching the sunset and a heron stalking supper made for a great high color photo. using the vivid setting and punching up the sunset color setting with a nikon coolpix the image turned out very nice.

Two Tulips by Russ Sexton, copyright
Another facet of my college photography was to provide interesting photos of simple objects, in very controled stuidos. This photo is side lighted by a 20 million candelpower lamp , Appling the Ansel Adams techniques of what is white ( the f stop ) and what is black , this photo fell right into place with the combination of scienticfic use of side lighting and the phototography techinque of white/black control.

Winter Walk by Russ Sexton, copyright
I live to get out in the mountains in a snow storm. With the limited visability and a true white/black scene in a blizzard at Monteagle Tennessee i made this photo. I try to use a high of Fstop possible to get the depth of feild. This is a color photo, the scene is blach and white. Just a reverse flip of shooting color scenes with black and white film.

RUSS SEXTON

I started Photography before college and fell in love with the art form. While in college I earned money working free lance for the newspaper and weddings. The college had a fantastic photo department that provided me access to other perofessional photographers and the darkrooms. This is where I learned the most, doing late night sports photos, and nature photography. After college, engineering was my goal. After many years the digital camera and computer programs (photoshop) became the new era of photography. With these new tools and old school techniques, like Ansel Adams white to black guidlines, photography is a whole new fronteir once again. Recently I have put aside the money making and focused on the "art of the print" and I have been having great fun ever since.

My favorite bible verse is Genisis 1.1 - In the beginning God created heaven and earth . --- now that is pretty cool
