Panoply Seeks Participants for Art Marketplace

The Arts Council, Inc. of Huntsville, Alabama invites fine artists
everywhere to apply to exhibit and sell their work at our popular Art
Marketplace during the Panoply Arts Festival. Types of media which
may be exhibited include: clay, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry,
mixed media, painting, photography, print making, sculpture, and
wood – or any combination of these materials.

Held the last full weekend of each April in downtown Huntsville's
Big Spring International Park, this all-embracing, outdoor, family-
friendly festival has consistently ranked among the "Top Twenty
Events" in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society and has
been listed as one of the state's Top Ten Tourism Events.
Attendance for this three-day spectacular typically exceeds 90,000
people (with record-breaking attendances in 2007-2009 averaging
120,000) who visit not only the marketplace, but also the Global
Village, the Official Alabama State Fiddling Championship, the
Homegrown Talent Contest, and the other exciting offerings.

As a result, artisans from across the United States compete for
acceptance in the Art Marketplace. This art show, juried by a panel
of distinguished professionals, features the best in painting,
pottery, jewelry, primitive arts, and more, and accepted artists have
two great opportunities: to display their one-of-a-kind artwork for
sale and to compete for top monetary awards including the "Best of
Show" (the Pat Flynn Kyser Award), the "Award of Distinction,"
and five Merit Awards!

The 29th Annual Panoply Arts Festival will be held on April 23-25,

Cutting & Pruning: 3) To Dwell

The call to me this year and the challenge is to submit myself to the cutting and pruning of God as He reveals those things in my life that are not fruitful that I might bear more fruit. I pray it might be a call and challenge to you as well.

In the last devotion, we discovered the repetition of the phrase “remain in” or “abide” as key to producing fruit. Here is the entire passage. "ABIDE in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it ABIDES in the vine, neither can you, unless you ABIDE in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever ABIDES in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not ABIDE in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you ABIDE in me, and my words ABIDE in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. ABIDE in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will ABIDE in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and ABIDE in his love.” John 15:4-10

Now, I know that was long and hopefully you didn’t just skim over it. I have a bad habit of doing that when I have heard something before, but then I miss seeing something fresh and anew. We as artists are supposed to be those that see things fresh and anew, so if you don’t have time to read it thoroughly right now, maybe come back to it when you do.

As mentioned last week, one of the meanings of this rich word "abide" is to dwell, which takes me to John 14:23 where Jesus says, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and the Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our HOME with him.” Ponder on the words, “make our home with him” . . . with you, with me! Think of having your best friend sitting with you on a cold winter morning, sipping coffee, looking out at the world and seeing it with new eyes, spiritual eyes. This takes place as He indwells us and we continue to dwell in His Word and spend time in prayer.

In this class, we will explore in-depth how to simplify what we see so that it may be used to express what we feel. We will learn to do this using the tools that are available to us as painters including materials, drawing, color, value, edges and design to create mood, harmony and perspective (3 dimensions). The class will include demonstrations, handouts, and individual attention to each student, snacks and coffee. We will work on 2 still life paintings to put into practice what we are learning and the medium through which this will be done is oil.

Learning to paint is actually learning to really stop and look. It is fundamentally learning how to simplify the vast information presented by our eyes and minds and hearts in an artistic way. It is also learning to express a mood, to describe our three dimensional world in two dimensions, and finally it is learning the patience to develop the skills to use the limited tools we have as painters to accomplish all this. It is one of the many challenges in life that can not be fully mastered; there is always some level of frustration and limitations due to the many variables involved. However, there is a wonderful feeling of fulfillment and joy when facing the challenge of trying to express what we see and feel. The gift of Creativity is inherent in our makeup and God given and to have fulfillment throughout our lives requires us to explore this challenge whether through painting or another form. - Sara Beth Fair

This call to artists is for submissions of works for group exhibition featuring leading edge contemporary art by innovative emerging artists and also established artists exploring new ideas, mediums and/or processes from TX, LA, MS, AL and FL. Email and CD submissions will be accepted according to the guidelines listed below through January 16, 2010. Exhibition dates: February 6 - 27, 2010.

BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and the core belief system at The BECA Foundation is that "New art + new design fuels the best of what's yet to come on this planet." The BECA Foundation's gallery space is located across the street from the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans in an 1100 square foot, beautifully renovated warehouse space situated in the heart of the New Orleans warehouse arts district. Our space exists as a place for innovative emerging contemporary art and design to grow and flourish in an environment that is accommodating to all.

ELIGIBILITY: This call is open to all artists at least 18 years of age residing in the states of TX, LA, MS, AL or FL. All works submitted must have been created within the last 2 years and must be original works or limited editions of no more than 10. All selected works must be made available for the duration of the exhibition. Accepted works and mediums for this Call include but are not limited to: site-specific installations, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, illustration, digital art, photography, video/new media, performance art, music and sound focused works, 3D animation, etc. In other words, we are open to multiple forms of creative culminations. Submitted works of art are not required to conform to any particular theme, medium, style or concept. Concept drawings/descriptions for works not yet created will be accepted as long as the works will be delivered to the gallery in full completion by the works receive deadline of February 1, 2010. Submitted 2-D works of art may have a maximum height of 7' (84 inches) and a maximum width of 4' (48 inches). Submitted 3-D works of art suspended vertically or floor based may have maximum dimensions of 7' (84 inches)H x 4' (48 inches)W x 4' (48 inches)D. HOW TO: Stretch Canvas for Paintings

Stretching Canvas For Oil & Acrylic Paintings

Canvas paintings are always stretched over some type of stretcher bar or strainer frame.

Materials Required

Canvas

Strainer frame

Stretcher bars

Corner keys

Canvas pliers

Staple gun with 3/8” staples

Procedure

1. Measure the canvas painting to be framed and select standard stretcher bars whenever possible. If odd measurements for a canvas are required, then a strainer frame must be cut from 1 x 2 fir strips to size, glued and nailed as you would a frame.

2. When joining stretcher bars, be sure they are square before stretching canvas. Use a carpenter’s square. Place two staples in each corner across the mitered cut of the stretcher bars to help keep frame square while stretching canvas painting.

3. Firmly crease the canvas along the outer edge where the painted and unpainted canvas meet. With staples on the bottom, center canvas on stretcher bars.

4. Place folded edge over short side of frame and staple at center of canvas edge.

5. Reverse to opposite side. Using canvas pliers to grip canvas, pull taut from corner and staple canvas edge to frame.

6. Turn frame to long side up and with canvas pliers grip and pull until diagonal wrinkles appear from the first two staples, then staple at the center of canvas edge.

7. Reverse to long side and pull taut with canvas pliers until a pair of diagonal wrinkles appear to form a diamond.

8. Move pliers two inches to left center staple and staple. Repeat in same direction, every two inches stapling toward the corner of the frame. Do the same from center staple to the right.

9. Reverse the frame to the opposite long side and repeat Step 8.

10. Repeat Step 8 on the two short sides of the canvas and frame.

11. Remove staples from mitered corner. Fold excess canvas over back of frame and staple. Do not trim surplus canvas from frame.

12. Insert two corner keys into each corner of frame, long side of key against the wall, and tap lightly in place. The keys will tighten the canvas whenever necessary. Also spraying the back of the canvas lightly with a mist of water will help tighten the canvas like a drum.

13. Inspect canvas stretching and mounting to make sure there are no wrinkles, subject matter is centered, and that the stretch bars/strainer frame is square before putting into frame.

The Dogwood Arts Festival. The exhibit will run from April 2-30, 2010

in a 300 mile perimeter of Knoxville.

Cutting & Pruning: 2) Abiding

Thanks to those who responded with encouragement and affirmation concerning the devotion on cutting and pruning. I hope it did not discourage any of you from the goals and resolutions you had already set, but challenged each of us to look at the big picture of life.

I always find the list making and goal creating part much easier than the applying part. I can agree in my soul on so many things that my flesh refuses to do. As a people in general, we tend to put more on our carts than we can possibly carry making us drop items off the sides that we have to stop and pick up, loose items off the back that we never notice and forget about and bear so much weight that we slip instead of walk, crawl instead of run, fly instead of soar! This year instead of putting more on our cart let's take Jesus at His word . . . "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My load is light." Matthew 11:28-30

What does this mean? How do we obtain this rest and take on this easy yoke, yet still be fruitful? Lets look back at John chapter 15. "Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing." John 15: 4, 5. Hmm, do you think he wants us to remain in him? "Remain in me" is also translated "abide" and it is used 10 times in verses 4 through 10. So, bearing fruit must be connected to abiding in Christ where we not only bear fruit, but find rest as well.

One of the meanings of this rich word "abide" is to dwell. So, in order to make 2010 a year of cutting and pruning we must dwell in God's Word and spend time in prayer to see what He reveals to each of us that needs cutting or pruning.

Redstone artists draw worldwide recognition

International Army Arts and Crafts contest produces 14 local winners

As a student, Linda Morton's art teacher gave her an "A" for her quiet demeanor – and told her to never take an art class again. She had no talent.

The 2009 Army Arts and Crafts Contest would beg to differ.

Morton received third place in the contest for her water-based painting "Brake Wheel," joining fellow Redstone winner Leslie Wood, who received third place in fibers and textiles, mixed media 3D and metal and jewelry, and seven others from the installation. More than 490 pieces of art from Army installations across the world were entered. The contest was open to deployed Soldiers, as well as Guard and Reserve Soldiers, civilians and family members, according to Jean Neal, program analyst with FMWRC-Community Recreation in San Antonio.

"Contest judges, professionals in arts and crafts fields, commented on the high degree of talent and inspiration in the contest entries," Neal said.

Cutting & Pruning: 1) Being Fruitful

I'm excited about the new year. This year the Lord has pressed upon me instead of adding goals and resolutions, to make it a year of cutting those things in my life that are not fruitful. I have come to realize if I focus more on cutting and pruning, then I will have a much better chance of reaching those goals and resolutions that seem to be the same every year.

Jesus stated, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it will be more fruitful." John 15: 1,2

Wow, did you notice the "in me"? Of course that applies to a specific group in Christ and it goes on to say in Verse 5 "I am the vine; YOU are the branches." Jesus does not say, God "cuts off every branch in those around me" even though He will or "cuts off every branch in my church" even though He will. His focus is on you personally dear precious ones!

Now the fruit primarily discussed in this section of scripture has to do with love and refers more to the fruit of living a Christ-like life produced by the Holy Spirit as discussed in Galatians 5:22,23, but it also refers to obedience. We know God is Sovereign and able to accomplish His will in us, but He also gives us responsibility in the knowledge He reveals. We can't just sit and wait on God to accomplish those things in us once He has shown us what actions to take. So, maybe this week spend some time before the Lord in prayer and in His Word and see what He reveals to you that needs cutting or pruning, then move into 2010 knowing He is able to accomplish those goals and resolutions in you.

First Annual Ornament Contest

Artisans Cove's Reflectives Frame and Art Gallery wants to thank everyone who participated in the First Annual Ornament Contest. The ornaments beautifully adorned the gallery tree. Contestants donated their ornaments to be auctioned off and the proceeds went to the charity organization, Kids to Love.
