About the artwork posted: One of Jane's favorite image is "Leala" and Jane notes: "Leala is a very special dog. She was a down-and-out-mangey-stray. She was terrified of people. She is now a registered therapy dog. We visit hurting people and try to brighten up their day."

I liked this quote Jane had on her website and would like to share it here:

"Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day,
rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind."

Proverbs 8:30

Ascribing Artists Exhibit: Reflections of the Spirit

Huntsville Art League, 3005 L&N Dr. Suite 2, Huntsville, AL 35801

May 1-31, 2010. Reception and Art Talk May 16, 2-4PM

Ascribing Artists is a creative ministry bringing together visual artists who desire to ascribe or attribute their work and life to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The ministry is inspired by Psalm 29:2, "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" and shows that we are to be "A Reflection of His Glory" in all that we do.

Not all Ascribing Artists paint religious themes or Biblical depictions. The subject matter of the artist is not necessarily what makes us Ascribing Artists, it is the heart behind the artist with the desire to share the gospel. We recognize that anything we do pales in comparison to the Glory of the Lord, so our desire is not to offer something that deserves praise, but to point you to the only ONE worthy of praise.

Artists on exhibit: Gail Bryant, Betty Burchfield, Rita Campbell, Melissa Carter, Shawn Doughty, Julie Ellsworth, Paul Fulda, Debbie Jones Futrell, Elizabeth Gawronski, Gina Hurst, Paul LaBathe, Johanna Littleton, Barbara Mitchell, Linda Morton, Cynthia Parsons, S. New Artwork by Betty Burchfield

Portrait by Betty Burchfield, copyright

Detail of portrait

Photo

Betty Burchfield notes, I was cleaning out my file drawer and found this small black and white picture of my friend, Heaven's Dad. I had totally forgotten that I told her I'd paint his portrait for her..... someday. I decided to surprise her and paint her precious Dad for her.....today!

When she came to view his picture, tears flowed down her face. She came over and touched his painting and it was if she had her Daddy back again. Every single wrinkle and mold was captured in the painting. I removed his hand and gave him a vibrant burgundy shirt, gave him a shave and a twinkle in his eye. She said his hair was always "tassled."

Heaven was so very close to her father. He was her "hero". When he died she felt lost and alone. She told me she had been really sad here lately and this painting helped to "perk her up".

Painting portraits is more than just brushes and paint..... it is a way of giving people an image of some treasured memory that seemed to have "faded away" and bring it back to life.

Making others happy makes God happy and is my way of giving back to Him the talent He gave to me.

Jesus said :
Mark12:31 You must love others as much as yourself. No other commandments are greater than these.

Scott Wiley: Creating art for life's sake

I don't know how I missed this article! It is about one of our very own Ascribing Artists, Scott Wiley! - better late than never.

    Creating art for life's sake

    By Kay Campbell

    January 29, 2010, 11:36AM
Scott WileySculptor Scott Wiley explains his drive to try to protect and recover the image of God through the message of his works, which include recreations of sewer manhole covers.

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Scott Wiley felt like he was leaving babies on a doorstep.

After 30 years of creating ceramic vessels, blown glass vases and interpretations of, of all things, sewer covers, Wiley needed to find his works a home.

"Pastor Rusty spoke like an artist, so I was able to give them up," Wiley said last week as he explained why he began taking pieces to him.
But he wanted Pastor Rusty Nelson, senior pastor at The Rock Family Worship Center, to know the stories behind each piece.

"That's when I started writing about them," Wiley said. "I felt like they needed a note or something."
Wiley's notes are preserved on the Web site noted on the base of each item. Even if the piece changes hands, the new owner can always learn its story and meaning.

So Wiley began leaving art with Nelson, directing him to give it away as he saw fit.

But last summer, Wiley happened to be in Nelson's office and noticed his art works still sitting on Nelson's shelf.

"Hey, you were supposed to be giving that away," Wiley said.

    Burning Heart"Burning Heart"

"I've got a better idea," Nelson told him.

Nelson, who is in India on a mission trip and couldn't be reached for comment, recommended Wiley contact Choose Life to arrange for an auction to raise money and awareness for the crisis pregnancy center.

"That's where your heart is," he told Wiley.

Wiley's works will be auctioned Saturday to benefit Choose Life of North Alabama.

It was the only way Wiley would consider having money enter into the equation, he said. He left the commercialized world of marketing his art a long, long time ago.

"I didn't want this to be about me," Wiley said. "All this is about God."

Wiley, 58, who works in design at Boeing, has felt compelled to protest abortions with his art since he was in college. The court decision defining abortion as a legal choice, Roe v. Wade, was given the same year he broke into sculpture and felt newborn as an artist.

"That's all I do with my art work," Wiley said. "It's about abortion - but it's not just about abortion. This is about discarding God's image."

Samford student spreads Bible messages by leaving art for the taking

By Greg Garrison -- The Birmingham News

    March 13, 2010, 5:30AM

MAWilliams1-0313.jpgMichael Aaron Williams, a student at Samford University, creates paintings in a studio at school, then plants them around Five Points South with Bible verses on the back. (The Birmingham News / Linda Stelter)A startling series of paintings began showing up on the buildings and in the alleys of Five Points South about a month ago, painted in acrylic on cardboard by a street artist.

They were the faces of people from around the world, often bearing pained expressions on their faces.

Anyone who liked the paintings, attached only with Stickum, could pull one off a wall and take it home. The artist welcomed that, writing the words "Take Me" on the back of each painting, along with a Bible verse and a Web site address.

"Once it leaves my hands on the street, it's a part of the street," said Michael Aaron Williams, 21, a fine arts student at Samford University, who began posting his paintings around Five Points South in February.

Artist's depiction of Seven Last Words of Christ

A little late for the post, but I thought this was interesting:

Artist's depiction of Seven Last Words of Christ marks a departure from tradition at Cahaba Valley Church

By Greg Garrison -- The Birmingham News

    March 27, 2010, 5:30AM

Pleasant-0327.jpgInk drawings splashed with watercolor by artist John Pleasant have become the focus of Good Friday services at Cahaba Valley Church, which has gradually loosened its Church of Christ heritage. (The Birmingham News / Joe Songer)John Pleasant grew up in a Church of Christ that had no art in it other than a painting of the Jordan River above the baptistery and plain-colored, non-decorative windows.

There was nothing special about Palm Sunday, Good Friday or Easter, he said.

"They preached against Christmas and Easter, because there's no special day; you celebrate Christ's resurrection every Sunday," Pleasant said. "We neglected the Crucifixion. A Good Friday service was not part of our tradition. We had nothing between Palm Sunday and Easter."

Pleasant, a retired environmental engineer who worked for U.S. Pipe for 38 years, has been an artist most of his life.

He was a founding member of Cahaba Valley Church of Christ in Shelby County in the early 1970s, which in recent years dropped part of its name to become simply Cahaba Valley Church. It has kept some Church of Christ traditions, such as a cappella harmonies, but also changed with the times by accepting women ministers and easing the taboo on celebrating religious art and holidays. "We were willing to try things," Pleasant said.

    Steal Birth by Lynn Weatherford

To view the full portion of this image go to:
    artworkbylynnweatherford.blogspot.com

In Lynn Weatherford's featured artist post she provided a glimpse into biblical verses that are very meaningful to her.

Psalms 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

Romans 8:28 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

This is the follow up to why those verses mean so much to her.

    Steal Birth

I believe in a God who can move mountains. A God who is awesome and powerful beyond my mind or any mind for that matter.

I often think God should think and do things, the way I think things should be done. Especially if I see the idea as good. During this thought process I pray and think I have everything figured out (whatever the challenge). I frequently have short term memory problems with the fact God is all knowing and all powerful. Because He certainly does not need me to help.

God sees the whole picture and I have tunnel vision no matter the size of my faith. So, with faith, I pray. And pray. And pray. It is not that God doesn’t answer my prayers. But plain and simple sometimes God says, "no! At this time I have to work hard to believe (again) God is all knowing. I have to remind myself frequently He knows what he is doing and I must be still and know He is God. Psalms 46:10

This painting laid dormant for nine years before I could put a brush to my canvas. Honestly, I think it took me that long to process the hurt and pain and remind myself I am not in charge....(or maybe I am a slow learner.) Romans 8:28

    Steal Birth

This painting is a statement painting. The statement is "God sometimes says, No"!

The title is a play on words. Steal is used here not to say God stole my baby because my baby was always His. Steal was used, upon his silent birth, because part of my heart was stolen.
The woman is nude to signify her vulnerability. The woman's hands show tension to bring attention to her fight to keep her son with her. Notice her finger nail slightly scratches the arm of God. God's hands are gently enveloping the baby to lift him up. The softness is exhibited with his lightly luminous arms. The baby grasp God's hand to show he is comforted by His presence.

This piece won two first place positions in a local competition with over 200 entries.

In Memory of our Dawson born silently November 11, 1998

Jeremiah 1:5: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

That piece of my heart will forever be missing.

    Thank you, Lynn
